Led by Grammy Award-winning violinist Jeremy Kittel, the string quintet blends elements of Celtic, bluegrass, jazz, folk and classical music.
Genre-blending masters Kittel & Co. will bring their eclectic sound to Interlochen's Dendrinos Chapel and Recital Hall on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 7:30 p.m. as part of Interlochen Presents.
Led by violinist, fiddler, and composer Jeremy Kittel, Kittel & Co. includes mandolin player Josh Pinkham, guitarist Quinn Bachand, cellist Nathaniel Smith, and hammer-dulcimer artist Simon Chrisman. Their most recent album, Whorls, premiered at No. 1 on the Billboard bluegrass charts. Bluegrass Situation called it "a feat of new acoustic, string band-rooted chamber music…. whimsical, alluring, and magnificent," while Earmilk described it as "…a devastatingly beautiful album… a stunning melting pot of classical and folk music, featuring some of the greatest musicians in the genre."
The concept of bringing people together underlies much of Whorls. "These instruments have a rich tradition of playing dance music. They were the way people got down, say, 150 years ago. Acoustic string bands in a room," Kittel said. "It was just as vital for dance gatherings in past times as modern dance music is in our culture today.”"
Kittel formerly played with the Grammy-winning Turtle Island Quartet and has worked as a composer and collaborator with such diverse artists as My Morning Jacket, Yo-Yo Ma and The Silk Road Ensemble, and Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn.
